Memories of Gran Vía
Casino Gran Vía
The permanent exhibition is distributed around the main rooms of this former palace, the headquarters of the Círculo Mercantil e Industrial of Madrid, witness to the Madrid life from its early years ‘Memorias de Gran Vía’ comprises 175 historical photographs coming from the photographic archives of the ABC newspaper and the Agencia EFE; some of them were taken even before the 20th century.
“ Exhibition is located in 15 rooms of the Casino, and each one covers a different topic.
In the ground floor, visitors will find generic pictures symbolizing the spirit of the exhibition as a whole; these are at the entrance lobby and in the building’s multiexperience space. After the entrance to the Gaming Room, you can watch some old images from Madrid’s daily life. En el primer tramo de escaleras que ascienden a la primera planta, se encuentran varias vistas de la Gran Via.
The atrium on the first floor shows photographs depicting the construction of Gran Vía. Visitors can continue their visit through the corridor leading to the Electronic Roulette room, where they will see photos of an almost unrecognizable Montera St., because of the time elapsed; in the same room, they can observe some city spots close to Gran Vía, such as Puerta del Sol, Plaza España or Alcalá St.
The Roulettes Room hosts those “memories” dedicated to nightlife and shows from decades ago, while the Poker Room is occupied by some stories which took place at that symbolic Madrid Street.
Climbing up the stairs to the second floor, both along the staircase, the atrium and in the Asian Baccarat room, the Casino has placed war or political topics lived on the streets of Gran Vía. Meanwhile, the corridor leading to the Círculo Mercantil Restaurant shows Kings and Queens from various times, while the dining hall shows events which took place at the facilities of the old headquarters of the Madrid society. Besides, some panoramic photographs of Puerta del Sol can be found. Visitors can finish their journey at the Poker Room, with a tribute to the Cibeles and Neptune fountains.
In order to access the exhibition, you only need to go to the registration at the entrance of Casino Gran Vía, as in any other facility of the same characteristics. This is an excellent excuse to let oneself be carried away by the restaurant and entertainment options of the various spaces in the building, and, why not, try your luck.
